Dr. James Murray was a Scottish lexicographer, philologist, and literary critic. He was born in Denholm, Scotland in 1837. He is best known as the chief editor of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), a role he held from 1879 until his death in 1915. Murray's work on the OED was crucial in establishing it as the preeminent dictionary of the English language. He oversaw a team of contributors who collected and analyzed words from across the English-speaking world, and he personally provided over 24,000 entries, including many rare and obscure words. Murray was also a respected literary critic and wrote extensively on the works of Shakespeare, Chaucer, and other English authors. He was awarded numerous honors during his lifetime, including a doctorate from the University of Oxford, and a knighthood from King Edward VII.
